For many people stoma surgery can be a life changing experience, purchasing these cards allows Colostomy UK, a national charity, to support the physical and mental wellbeing of these individuals (ostomates) who have had stoma surgery. A stoma is an opening on the abdomen that can be connected to either the digestive or urinary system to allow urine or faeces to be diverted out of the body and collected in a disposable bag. Men, women, children and babies may have a stoma for the treatment of illnesses including cancer, Crohn’s disease and diverticulitis. It is also sometimes necessary following trauma to the abdomen or spinal cord injury.
The charity’s projects and campaigns raise awareness of ‘life with a stoma’ and empower ostomates to return to sports, hobbies, other activities or support individuals to have the confidence to take up fresh challenges. Colostomy UK also encourage organisations to be more stoma aware, through training, influencing and encouraging them to make their facilities more inclusive.
